I believe that a doula supports the laboring woman and her loved ones through the process of birth. She comforts the woman and normalizes the journey for all involved. She listens and gives calm to what can be a fearful time and environment. A doula is there to mirror the beauty of the woman and remind her of her power, energy and spirit.

In 2005, I gave birth to my son with the support of a very experienced and wonderful doula. I didn’t plan on having any friends or family present because we were living on the East Coast very far from relatives, but I knew that we needed support. The birth ended up being complicated, involving many medical interventions. Our doula not only helped bring calm, but also provided me with terrific support and guidance. This was my first glimpse into the world of birth and was the beginning of a journey into the study and appreciation of the birth process. I became a member of DONA in April of 2006.
